"The authorities say 42 to 50 houses have been affected. 150 people are feared buried, we have sent two rescue teams to the spot," an official from India's National Disaster Management Authority told AFP.
According to AP, the landslide occurred after the area suffered heavy rains.
India's CNN-IBN television channel said that rescue teams had difficulty reaching the scene because heavy rains had also left roads leading to Ambe village in Pune district severely damaged, muddy, and many roads blocked by rocks and soil.
The channel also said that the rescue team found the first five bodies and also saved five others.
About 30 ambulances were dispatched to the scene, along with several excavators and cranes, according to PTI news agency.
According to AFP, last year about 6,000 people died due to flash floods and landslides during the rainy season in Uttarakhand state.
