The disaster mitigation agency in Sulawesi province, Indonesia, said that heavy rains that began on the night of February 16 caused severe flooding and landslides on the morning of February 17. This flood has claimed 17 lives, including 4 children. The flood also swept away thousands of houses, forcing more than 3,800 people to evacuate.
Indonesia regularly experiences heavy rains, floods and landslides that cause great loss of life and property. The main causes are environmental pollution and indiscriminate deforestation, which has left most of the forested land uncultivated.
The peak of this year, last January, was a heavy rain causing floods in the capital Jakarta, killing 32 people and forcing 46,000 people to leave their homes./.
