Specifically, this attack campaign called "Darkhotel" targets important figures in the financial, scientific, military, and police worlds. By infiltrating the wireless internet networks of luxury hotels, hackers will trick their victims into installing malicious software. This software will automatically search for passwords in Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer browsers. They also collect information about the security software used and information entered from the keyboard. After infiltrating and obtaining valuable confidential information, hackers will meticulously erase all traces in the hotel's Wi-Fi network and disappear into the "darkness".

According to the Russian security company, the campaign has been active for about four years now, and its peak activity was in August 2010. Since then, thousands of successful attacks have occurred. About 90% of the attacks took place in Japan, Taiwan, China, Russia and South Korea. However, the most frequent targets are high-ranking passengers from foreign countries, especially the United States.

According to Kaspersky Lab, the targets of the attack are usually business directors, marketing directors, senior researchers in electronics, military equipment, finance, transportation and pharmaceutical companies. In addition, high-ranking officials in the police, military and non-governmental organizations are also on the list of targets of the "Darkhotel" campaign.

Highly sophisticated and extremely dangerous, this campaign is being investigated by Kaspersky Lab. The Russian cybersecurity company said it is investigating attacks that occurred on a number of hotel networks in 2014. At the same time, they also sent a warning to travelers to be more cautious when traveling abroad for business. Timely updating of computer security software is also one of the recommended measures to minimize the risk of being attacked by bad hackers.
