According to the Russian security company, the campaign has been active for about four years now, with its peak activity in August 2010. Since then, thousands of successful attacks have been carried out. About 90% of the attacks took place in Japan, Taiwan, China, Russia and South Korea. However, the most frequent targets were high-ranking passengers from foreign countries, especially the United States.
According to Kaspersky Lab, the targets of the campaign are usually business executives, marketing managers, senior researchers in electronics, military equipment, finance, transportation and pharmaceutical companies. In addition, high-ranking officials in the police, military and non-governmental organizations are also included in the list of targets of the "Darkhotel" campaign.
Highly sophisticated and particularly dangerous, this campaign is being investigated by Kaspersky Lab. The Russian cybersecurity company said it was investigating attacks that occurred on several hotel networks in 2014. At the same time, they also sent a warning to travelers to be more cautious when traveling abroad for business. Timely updating of computer security software is also one of the recommended measures to minimize the risk of being attacked by bad hackers.
