New research says eating grapes every day could improve your eyesight as you age.

According to a new study, older adults who ate grapes every day for four months reported improved vision. The findings were published in the scientific journalFood and Functionsaid, ingrapeContains compounds that are good for the macula (a part of the retina, concentrated with many light-sensitive cells).

Dr Jung Eun Kim, author of the study, shared: "This is the first study to show that eating grapes has a beneficial effect on human eyes. This is very interesting, especially with the increasing aging population. Grapes are a fruit that is easy to buy and easy to eat. Analysis has shown that eating 350g of grapes/day is good for the eyes."

In the new study, the authors randomly assigned 34 people to eat 350g of grapes every day for 16 weeks, while the others took a placebo. Those who ate grapes had significant improvements in macular pigment optical density, antioxidant capacity, and phenolic content. The placebo group had no such effects.

In addition, Dr. John Pezzuto, West New England University (USA), estimates that a person can enjoy a life 4-5 years longer if they eat grapes regularly.

As for why grapes are good for you, nutritionist Laura McDermott explains: “The antioxidant content makes grapes naturally anti-inflammatory. Adding grapes to a balanced diet will fight free radicals, reduce oxidative stress and create anti-inflammatory properties.”
