On July 4, 2012, VNPT and satellite manufacturing contractor Lockheed Martin held the VINASAT-2 satellite handover ceremony, marking the official milestone of VNPT in the process of operating, managing and trading the VINASAT-2 satellite.

After being successfully launched into space at 5:13 a.m. on May 16 (Vietnam time), the VINASAT-2 satellite was moved from the transition orbit to the geostationary orbit (nearly 36,000 km from the Earth) and on May 21, the VINASAT-2 satellite was successfully positioned at the orbital position of 131.8 degrees East. Just a few hours after leaving the rocket, the Ground Control Center received the transmission and reception signals from the VINASAT-2 satellite.

VNPT officially receives VINASAT-2.

Mr. Pham Long Tran, Chairman of VNPT's Board of Members, said that Lockheed Martin experts have recently conducted measurements of the entire satellite system to ensure the stable operation of VINASAT-2 before handing it over to VNPT. During the process of measuring the satellite in orbit, VNPT's technical staff and Telesat's consultantsCanadahas been closely following Lockheed Martin's testing progress.

Tests on control, operating capacity, and signal transmission all showed that the VINASAT-2 satellite ensures technical and quality parameters as committed in the Contract. On June 21, at Lockheed Martin's factory, the parties signed the Minutes of approval of detailed measurements of the satellite in orbit.

And at this point, the satellite control has been officially transferred to the International Telecommunication Company (VTI) under VNPT - the unit responsible for managing, exploiting and trading VINASAT satellite services. According to the provisions of the Contract, after handing over the satellite, Lockheed Martin will continue to send 2 experts to provide direct support for a period of 3 months. After receiving the handover, in July 2012, VNPT will officially provide services from VINASAT-2.

According to the initial plan, VINASAT-2 satellite will have a lifespan of 15-16 years, however, sharing at the handover ceremony, Mr. Hoang Minh Thong, Director of VNPT's Telecommunication Project Management Board, said that VINASAT-2 will have a lifespan of up to 21.3 years. VINASAT-2 satellite meets technical criteria that even surpass VINASAT-1. The satellite's reliability even exceeds the requirements.

The implementation of the VINASAT-2 Project aims to achieve the country's strategic goal of enhancing telecommunications infrastructure capacity, meeting the demand for satellite use in the domestic and regional markets. At the same time, VINASAT-2 will, together with VINASAT-1, form a satellite system with the ability to reserve capacity and minimize risks between satellites, contributing to enhancing safety and stability in the process of providing services.

To effectively exploit the VINASAT-2 satellite, VNPT has been promoting the expansion of customers in many different fields such as oil and gas, banking, finance; focusing on serving customers with communication needs in remote areas, border areas, islands, including foreign customers in the markets of Laos, Cambodia... With the capacity and experience in exploiting and trading the VINASAT-1 satellite, VNPT believes that the VINASAT-2 satellite can recover the investment capital within 10 years.
