Just 18 years old, Nguyen Van Quynh was imprisoned and made a series of mistakes. His dissolute life made him pay the price by appearing in court three times. At this trial, Quynh asked the court to allow him to see his son to tell him a few things...

Youth in prison

Nguyen Van Quynh (29 years old), residing in Nghi Kim commune, Vinh city, is the youngest of three siblings. Although living in the suburbs of the city and being given the opportunity to study by his family, this young man played around and hung out with bad friends. After finishing 10th grade, Quynh dropped out of school. A few years later, this young man was in trouble with the law for the crime of "Theft of property". In May 2013, the People's Court of Vinh city sentenced defendant Nguyen Van Quynh to 9 months in prison with a suspended sentence for the crime of "Theft of property".

If the first time he committed a crime, he could have used the excuse of being young and ignorant. But, when he grew up, especially after that fall, Quynh would change to live a better life. However, after getting rid of his "two-finger" habit, this young man got involved with drugs. That is the reason why this defendant was sentenced to 4 years in prison for "Illegal possession of drugs" in 2020.

After serving his sentence, Quynh returned to his hometown. Instead of starting a new life, staying away from illegal acts, he once again upset his parents and relatives. This time, Nguyen Van Quynh and his friends committed the act of "Illegal drug trafficking".

Specifically, in early December 2023, Quynh contacted Tran Van Trinh (35 years old, residing in Minh Chau commune, Dien Chau district) to discuss buying drugs to sell. Trinh agreed, so he took a bus to the mountainous area of Nghe An to meet a man named Long (unknown background) to ask to buy drugs. This person said he had "goods" but asked for a deposit.

After hearing the news from his friend, on December 13, Nguyen Van Quynh transferred 7.2 million VND to Trinh to deposit to buy drugs. Two days later, the couple rode a motorbike to Que Phong district to meet Long to hand over 30 million VND to buy drugs. After receiving the money, the seller promised the two would deliver the drugs later.

At the meeting point, Long pointed to a nearby electric pole to signal where the drugs were hidden for Quynh to come and get them. After receiving the drugs, the two returned to Vinh city. On the way, the two young men discussed that if anything unexpected happened, Quynh would throw the drugs away from her.

At around 2am on December 16, when the two arrived at Chau Hanh commune, Quy Chau district, they were asked by the police to conduct an administrative check. As originally planned, Quynh quickly threw the bag of drugs onto the roadside. However, the police discovered his actions and arrested him along with more than 138 grams of drugs.

A young father's plea

For the above crimes, both defendants Nguyen Van Quynh and Tran Van Trinh were prosecuted for "Illegal drug trafficking". At the recent trial, the two defendants admitted to the crimes as charged in the indictment. Defendant Quynh stated that he was the one who invested in drug trafficking, while Trinh directly went to find the source of the "goods". When questioned by the court about the origin of the money for drug trafficking, Quynh stated that it was from savings during his time working for hire.

The two defendants confessed that they intended to buy drugs to resell for profit. However, they were arrested before they could sell them. Both expressed remorse for their crimes and expressed remorse.

When the court allowed him to have his final say before the panel of judges deliberated, defendant Quynh asked for two things. First, he asked the court to consider reducing his sentence because he realized that his actions were wrong and violated the law. The defendant sincerely repented of his mistakes and hoped to receive leniency from the law.

In the second request, defendant Quynh asked the panel of judges to allow him to see his young child during the court's deliberations to say a few words. For the defendant, his young child is now the motivation for him to strive and reform himself, but for many months he has not had the opportunity to see his child.

As soon as the court entered the courtroom to deliberate, the defendant's eyes filled with tears. The young father quickly hugged his little child. Taking advantage of the few minutes to see his child, Quynh whispered to him, then asked relatives to take care of him and raise him to be a good person.

Through his own mistakes, Quynh must have realized that the price he had to pay was too high. It was high that his youth had to be buried in prison, and even more so that he could not be with his young child and witness his growth and maturity.

For this crime, defendant Nguyen Van Quynh was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "Illegal drug trafficking". That was also the sentence given to defendant Tran Van Trinh.

Not yet 30 years old, Quynh has been to prison 3 times. Hopefully this time, the young father will turn around and start a new life for his child before it's too late.
