Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan (from Tuc Mac village, Nam Dinh) is a great general of the nation, three times leading the army to drive the Mongols out of the country, protecting the long-term independence of the country. He was given the title of King, with the name Hung Dao, so our people often respectfully call him Hung Dao Vuong. He is the one who has many famous sayings expressing the spirit of the nation in the face of foreign invasion.
In 1284, the Mongols invaded us for the second time. King Tran Nhan Tong appointed Hung Dao Vuong as Commander-in-Chief to lead the entire army to fight the enemy. The enemy was too strong, so he and his soldiers had to retreat to Van Kiep. He left behind the immortal saying: "If Your Majesty wants to surrender, please cut off my head first." It was thanks to this heroic saying that our army and people won a great victory a few months later. In 1287, the Mongols invaded us for the third time, determined to wash away the humiliation of the previous two defeats. At the Bach Dang River, Hung Dao Vuong called his generals and soldiers to point their hands down to the Hoa River and swear: If we cannot defeat the enemy this time, we swear not to return to this river again. Thanks to that, history books today still record the famous Bach Dang River battle.
In addition to his military talent, Hung Dao Vuong was also an intelligent and erudite person, well-versed in the classics, well-versed in strategy, and well-versed in astronomy and geography. He compiled the "Essentials of Military Strategy" and the "Secrets of Ten Thousand Lives" to teach his generals and soldiers how to fight and use strategy. He also issued a proclamation to his soldiers, inciting their hatred of the enemy with a determination marked in his hands with the two words "Sat That" (determined to kill the Yuan-Mongol invaders), etc. In all three times the Yuan-Mongol army attacked our Dai Viet country, Hung Dao Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan was appointed by the Tran King as a general to fight the enemy. Especially in the second and third resistance wars against the Yuan-Mongol, under his leadership, the army and people of Dai Viet won in Chuong Duong, Ham Tu, Van Kiep, Bach Dang, driving the Yuan-Mongol army out of the country's borders.
The outstanding talent of Hung Dao Vuong is also in the fact that he clearly realized that the people are the source of strength to protect the country, the source of invincible strength, the source of strength that no brutal enemy can subdue. His profound policy, the peak of which is the thought: "To be lenient with the people's strength to create a deep-rooted and lasting plan is the best policy to protect the country". Currently, people have built temples to worship him in most localities across the country and honor him as Duc Thanh Tran.
