(Baonghean) -In Hung Tien commune (Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An), people often talk about teacher Ho Xuan Thanh who quietly prepares lessons every night for his free classes every Saturday and Sunday. His students are poor children, taught by the teacher with dedication and love.
In July 2008, Mr. Ho Xuan Thanh (teacher of Hung Khanh Primary School, Hung Nguyen) retired. Although he was reunited with his wife, children and grandchildren in hamlet 3, Hung Tien commune (Hung Nguyen), the "ferryman" missed the ferry and the wharf terribly. He missed the white chalk, the blackboard, the innocent eyes focused on each page. At times like that, he brought old lesson plans and flipped through each page as if he wanted to relive the days standing on the podium. Hung Tien was still very poor, people only knew how to work hard all year round in the fields, just enough to make ends meet. Economic difficulties, poverty and hardships made parents not take good care of their children's education, so the poor academic results made the teacher feel guilty.
With deep sympathy from his partner, the teacher pooled money to buy tables and chairs, cleaned the house to make room to open a free class for 4th and 5th graders in the area so that on Saturdays and Sundays, his small house would resound with the chirping of children reading their lessons. His classes received enthusiastic responses from parents and students. Nearly 40 years of experience in teaching and nurturing many generations of excellent students at Hung Khanh Primary School (Hung Nguyen) has been continued in these special classes. The teacher confided: "We only need to provide teaching methods, but the learning and doing exercises are up to the students. Only then can we promote creativity and independence in the way each student learns. A teacher must be someone who knows how to instill in the students' souls a passion for learning. Only with passion and determination can they progress in their studies...".

The teacher collected difficult problems on the Internet and solved them using many different methods, then guided the students to compare and find the fastest, most accurate and concise solution. But finding a good solution is not everything. Solving a problem in the most optimal way but with unscientific writing and presentation is also difficult to get a perfect score. Therefore, in addition to guiding the students on how to solve it, the teacher focused on training them to be careful in presentation and argumentation. For the teacher, handwriting is one of the criteria for evaluating the ethics of a student. Careful handwriting shows a careful person, thinking carefully before doing things, students with clean handwriting and clear presentation are those with pure souls.
The teacher's method of practicing handwriting is also very special. Each student who comes to him must practice writing 4 letters: o, l, m, s. For each of these letters, they must write 1,000 times. Every round, straight, thin, and bold stroke of the Vietnamese language is contained in those 4 letters. Under his guidance, students in the village and commune have made remarkable progress. Many other teachers take him as an example to follow. Free classes of Ms. Le Thi Tam, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Nuoi, and Mr. Nguyen Van Hanh have also been opened. Even his daughter, who is currently an English teacher in the mountainous district of Anh Son, has followed her father's example and volunteered to teach free classes to poor students. For Mr. Thanh, that is a great joy and happiness because his work has spread.
On holidays and Tet, the teacher's house is bustling with the laughter of parents and students. They come to report on their children's academic achievements and express their gratitude to the teacher. Mr. Ho Van Sam, parent of Ho Thi Thanh (5th grade student at Hung Tien Primary School) shared: The teacher only accepts thanks but definitely does not accept gifts. He said he teaches for free because he loves the students and poor parents. We, the parents, are very grateful to Mr. Thanh.
With the opening of free classes at home, over the past 4 years, nearly 200 students from Hung Thang and Hung Tien communes have come to the teacher's house to learn letters, math, and the noble virtues of the teacher. The passion and love for students like his own children has also spread to his wife. Mrs. Tran Thi Lan - every day, she personally boils water and cleans the classroom to serve teachers and students. "If it weren't for her sharing, I probably wouldn't have been able to do this," the teacher proudly said about his beloved wife.
With his contributions to the cause of promoting education in the locality, in December 2010, he was honored to be one of four individuals from Nghe An province to go to Hanoi to attend the National Conference summarizing 4 years of implementing the Campaign to Study and Follow the Moral Example of Ho Chi Minh. When he received the invitation, he thought it was sent by mistake because "he had not done anything". Mr. Thanh is always like that, simple and pure.
