Fraudulently appropriating more than 700 million, sentenced to 11 years in prison

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of November 25, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try the case of fraud and property appropriation against Bui Thi Phuong (born in 1985, residing in Anh Son town).

According to the indictment, from January to September 2014, although she had no job, Bui Thi Phuong introduced herself as having a close relationship with the leaders of Nghe An Department of Health to receive money to help 2 victims get jobs at Anh Son District Medical Center, 1 victim at Vinh City General Hospital, 1 victim at the Provincial People's Committee and 1 other person at the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank of Nghe An province.

After receiving the money from the victims, Phuong did not get a job as promised but used it for personal expenses. Authorities determined that the amount of money that Bui Thi Phuong appropriated from the four victims was 725 million VND, of which the least was 75 million VND for one person and the most was 390 million VND for the other. After the incident was exposed, Phuong compensated the victims 130 million VND and then fled. On July 25, 2015, Bui Thi Phuong was arrested.

At the trial, Bui Thi Phuong admitted to the crime as stated in the indictment and hoped to receive leniency from the law.

The representative of the Provincial People’s Procuracy proposed a sentence of 7-8 years in prison for Bui Thi Phuong’s fraud and property appropriation. Considering the case as a whole, the panel sentenced Phuong to 11 years in prison.
