Earlier, the Syrian rebel group captured 44 Fijian soldiers belonging to the UN peacekeeping force and surrounded Philippine soldiers at two checkpoints in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights. The rebels, suspected of belonging to the al-Nusra Front, the al-Qaeda branch in Syria, demanded that the Filipino soldiers lay down their arms and surrender. However, the UN peacekeeping force responded by attacking.
The United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the attack on the peacekeepers and demanded the “immediate and unconditional release of all detained peacekeepers”./.
