Why tomatoes reduce the risk of kidney cancer
A recent Japanese study shows that women who eat a lot of tomatoes or vegetables containing lycopene can reduce the risk of kidney cancer.
Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes, watermelon, grapefruit, and papaya. According to some studies, Lycopene may reduce the risk of certain cancers, including lung and stomach cancer.
Researchers looked at nearly 92,000 postmenopausal women, followed from the mid-1990s to 2013. All of the women were participating in the Women's Health Initiative, a long-term study that helps researchers better understand the causes of disease in middle-aged and older women.
During the study period, 383 women were diagnosed with kidney cancer. Researchers looked at the relationship between kidney cancer and several other vitamins and nutrients in the diet, including lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenes.

The results showed that only lycopene could reduce the risk of kidney cancer. Patients who consumed the highest amount of lycopene had a 45% lower risk of kidney cancer than those who ate the lowest amount of lycopene. The diet of those who consumed the highest amount of lycopene was about four tomatoes a day. However, this lycopene intake did not come from tomatoes alone, but could also come from tomato sauce or other fruits and vegetables that contain lycopene.
Kidney cancer is a common type of cancer that has no obvious symptoms in its early stages, and is often discovered accidentally during a medical examination, or until the cancer has progressed to the next stage.
In the later stages, signs of kidney cancer include blood in the urine, back pain, and feeling generally unwell. However, these symptoms can also be signs of other health problems, such as infections. Therefore, it is important to see a doctor if you have these symptoms.
According to scientists, oxidative stress may play an important role in the development of kidney cancer. A diet rich in micronutrients with antioxidant properties will have a positive effect on the risk of this cancer.
