(Baonghean.vn) -The photo was posted online by Shanna Niehaus, mother of a 5-year-old boy with autism, along with the touching story behind it.

“Did you see this moment? I have never seen anything like it. Yesterday was the first time my 5-year-old son Kainoa, who has autism, met his therapy dog, Tornado. We are Americans living in Japan and have been preparing for Tornado for 2 years.

This photo captures the face of a mother who cannot hold, bathe, dress or touch her son - seeing her son actively lean against his therapy dog for the first time with a bond that is difficult to describe in words.

This is the face of a mother who watched her son make countless attempts at social interaction that failed. No friends. No connections. She sat with him while he cried every night for months after countless attempts and therapies.

Now, she sat behind her child and watched this moment in silence, with a choked happiness and unable to speak.

It was worth every effort for him, every diagnosis, every dollar, every paperwork, every conference, every tear, every step forward, every step back, and every uncertainty about the future. But somehow, just because of this moment, just because of Tornado, I believed that it would all be okay.

As a mother, I have witnessed countless difficult and painful moments of my son and I have cried my fair share. But yesterday, I cried for a completely different reason. It was a feeling that no words can describe.”

It is difficult to imagine the pain of a mother who cannot hug her son for fear of causing the child to have a psychological breakdown. Children with autism have a lot of difficulty forming bonds with the people around them.

That’s why therapy dogs are trained specifically for autistic children. They can calm the child down during a meltdown, watch over the child, and alert parents when help is needed. Dogs behave differently than humans, so autistic children often find it easier to accept and get along with dogs.

Autism is not a disease but a developmental disorder. It cannot be “cured” with medication. But animals in general and dogs in particular can help autistic people overcome some of their problems. Their attention, excitement and warmth are very effective in helping autistic children establish connections with the world around them.
