Explaining the cause of the unusual heat of the past few days
“The heat wave currently occurring in the North will last until February 28, with the highest temperature reaching 32 degrees Celsius. This is also a rare heat wave,” said Mr. Le Thanh Hai, Deputy General Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
According to Mr. Hai, normally in February every year, the weather is quite cold, with many severe cold spells. On average, there are 2 to 3 cold spells a month.
“However, in February this year, the weather was hardly cold, there were no severe cold spells, but on the contrary, the weather was hot. Typically, on February 24, the temperature reached nearly 30 degrees Celsius. The weather continues to be hot today,” Mr. Hai said.

This February, there were days when the temperature in the North reached nearly 30 degrees Celsius. |
Mr. Hai said that this heat wave will last until February 28, the highest temperature can reach 32 degrees Celsius. This heat wave will not affect people's daily life. On March 1, the North will receive a cold air mass and the weather will become cold again.
“The cause of this heat wave is that the cold air is weak and not strong enough to reach Vietnam. Therefore, people feel hot and stuffy,” said Mr. Hai.
Mr. Hai added that normally in winter, every 5 days there will be a strong cold air mass flowing down to the North, causing the temperature to drop sharply or maintaining the existing cold weather. But in February 2015, there was no strong cold air mass and it was very weak, not enough to flow into Vietnam. Therefore, it caused heat in the North.
“There was also a year on March 8, in Hanoi, the temperature reached 36 degrees Celsius. The current heat wave is unusual and rare,” Mr. Hai added.
Mr. Hai said that in March 2015, there will be about 4 cold air waves that will strengthen and flow down to the North. In April, there will be about 2-3 waves. In May, there will be about 2 waves. These cold air waves will be weak and will not cause severe cold, but will only cause thunderstorms and hail. The common temperature will be from 14 to 20 degrees Celsius.
It is forecasted that in 2015 there will be about 9 to 10 storms and tropical depressions active in the East Sea. Of these, about 5 storms and tropical depressions will affect the mainland of Vietnam.
Heat waves in the North and Central regions will occur in more frequent periods but will be less severe and last longer than in 2014. Heavy rains in the North will be concentrated from June to August 2015.
