The attack was later claimed by the Islamic State (IS). On the IS Twitter account, the extremists posted: “IS fighters attacked the Spanish embassy in Tripoli with explosives.”
“IS extremists hid explosives near the outer walls of the Spanish Embassy in the capital Tripoli. The explosion caused material damage to the embassy building as well as adjacent buildings,” said Issam Naas, a spokesman for the Libyan government.
This is not the first time that IS has targeted foreign embassies in Libya. On Sunday, April 19, IS gunmen killed two people in front of the South Korean Embassy. On April 13, they also bombed the Moroccan Embassy. The two embassies are located on the same street.
After being present in Syria, Iraq and Sinai in Egypt, Libya is gradually becoming the new operating area of IS. The attack on the Spanish Embassy and the execution of 28 Ethiopian hostages on April 19 once again proved the expansion of IS in Libya. It seems that they are challenging the Libyan government and the world in general by continuously carrying out brutal attacks and executions.
