MU 1-2 Real: Theatre of tears, anger and frustration

March 6, 2013 09:01

Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Nani, Danny Welbeck, Robin Van Persie, the caretakers, the security guards, the ball boys, the tens of thousands of fans at Old Trafford, tens of millions of MU fans around the world, referee Graham Poll, the British press, those who hate Türkiye and a lot of neutral people have, are and will pour the worst words on referee Cuneyt Cakir. Like the brutal killer in A Nightmare on Elm Street who is always waiting to kill you in your dreams, Cakir ended Man.United's dream with a weapon sharper than a knife and faster than a gun: the red card.

Score:

Manchester United: Sergio Ramos 48' (own goal)
Real Madrid: Luka Modric 66', Cristiano Ronaldo 69'
Red card: Nani (Manchester United) 56'

People will forget Sergio Ramos' own goal, Diego Lopez's great saves, Sir Alex Ferguson's skillful approach to the game, Jose Mourinho's reasonable adjustments, Luka Modric's perfect shot, Cristiano Ronaldo's goal because Mr. Cakir's red card for Nani became the most notable situation of the match (if counting neutral fans and experts) and the only notable situation (for Red Devils fans).

I say that because the match was clearly divided into two parts. Part 1: Real attacked MU like running into an invisible wall. CR7 was playing the role of "the phantom in the theater" while Mesut Oezil kept the "silent German" company. Raphael Varane was being praised to the ninth cloud but suddenly made extremely silly mistakes while Mourinho showed off a boring style of play. Then the ball was floating, Nani raised his foot, Alvaro Arbelona rushed to Nani's feet and he fell down. Cakir was as cold as an executioner and pulled out a red card, which was also the color on Sir Alex's face, which was furious. But like an arrow leaving the bow, that decision could not be taken back.

The match will be remembered for this image alone.

The match then took a different turn. Mourinho sent Luka Modric onto the pitch and it was the Croatian midfielder who equalized just a few minutes later with a beautiful long-range shot. Moving Gonzalo Higuain to the right wing was also a good move by the "special one" because just 3 minutes after the equalizer, Higuain's cross found CR7.inside the penalty areaand he scored the winning goal against his old team.

How artistic Modric's goal was, how expressive CR7's face was after defeating De Gea, but all of it was overshadowed by a tiny card that every player fears. The amount of "bricks and stones" that referee Cakir received after the Old Trafford night could have built a New Trafford, perhaps. But luck, including terrible luck like Real and terrible bad luck like MU, is always present. It can destroy all tactical plans and all personnel calculations.

Real was unlucky when Ramos scored an own goal, but MU was... unluckier. So Real went on and MU watched their dream shatter into pieces. Such is life. Red Devils, don't cry!
