Ephedra, scientifically known as Herba Ephedrae, is the dried above-ground part of many types of ephedra: grass ephedra, horsetail ephedra, and middle ephedra. The stem and leaves of ephedra are used as a medicine to treat asthma and colds. Ephedra roots are used as an astringent.

According to Oriental medicine, ephedra has a spicy taste, warm properties, and enters the lung and bladder meridians. The drug has the effect of inducing perspiration, relieving symptoms, relieving asthma and cough, promoting urination, reducing edema, and warming and dispelling cold pathogens. To treat coughs and asthma in upper respiratory tract infections, bronchitis, bronchial asthma, whooping cough, etc., one of the following prescriptions can be chosen:
“Tam Ao Thang” recipe for cough and asthma: 6g ephedra, 10g almonds, 3g licorice. Boil and drink 1 dose per day.
Recipe “Ma Hanh Thach Cam Thang Gia Vi”: 8g ephedra, 8g almonds, 8g licorice, 8g fritillaria, 20g gypsum, 12g Platycodon grandiflorum, 12g Scutellaria baicalensis. Boil and drink 1 dose per day.
“Xiao Qing Long Tang” recipe: 8g ephedra, 12g white peony, 8g cinnamon, 8g ginger, 6g processed pinellia, 8g licorice, 6g asarum, 6g schisandra. Boil and drink 1 dose per day.
Note: Do not use for symptoms of excessive sweating, lung deficiency with high fever.
Use with caution in patients with hypertension.
