Man Utd dominated the first half with a series of chances to open the scoring. Lukaku missed a one-on-one in the early minutes while Marouane Fellaini and Marcos Rojo took turns hitting the post and crossbar before the break.
Basel were much better in the second half with 12 shots. Renato Steffen and Dimitri Oberlin sent the Man Utd goal reeling and Michael Lang hit the post with a header. Lang had little to regret, however, as he scored a simple tap-in from close range from Raoul Petretta's cross.
The defeat to Basel means Man Utd will have to wait until the final round to secure a Champions League spot. The Manchester club remain top of Group A with 12 points, while Basel and CSKA Moscow have nine. Man Utd only need to avoid a six-goal deficit when playing at Old Trafford against CSKA in the final round to progress.
Man Utd had an exciting first half, having 74% possession and not allowing the home team to have a single shot on target. However, Mourinho's players were unable to convert their superiority on the pitch into goals.
Basel became dangerous and picked up the pace of the game with some good work from Lang, Oberlin and Mohamed Elyounoussi after the break. The chances kept coming for the home side, while Man Utd started to fall back in the hope of getting at least a point. Basel denied Man Utd this with Lang breaking free and scoring.

Man Utd had Pogba in the starting lineup and brought Ibrahimovic on in the final minutes like when they met Newcastle in the last match. Pogba was no longer able to maintain his high performance in the second consecutive match, often having to drop deep to support the defense. Apart from the assist for Lukaku at the beginning of the match and a dangerous free kick, the French player did not make a difference despite playing in the attacking midfielder position.
Meanwhile, Ibrahimovic did not have much time to make his mark despite setting a record as the first player to play in the Champions League for seven different clubs.
