Impersonating police to defraud over 700 million VND

Ha lied that she had an account in a foreign bank, but that she had to deposit money to withdraw money from the account to scam Ms. TTY.

On August 29, the People's Court of Dong Xoai town (Binh Phuoc) opened a mobile trial and sentenced defendant Vu Hong Ha (27 years old, residing in Loc Thanh commune, Bao Lam district, Lam Dong) to 12 years in prison for the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".

According to the indictment, in August 2015, Ha went to Binh Phuoc to visit a friend, then rented a hotel in Bom Bo to stay. After 3 months in Binh Phuoc, Ha became friends with a number of people, including Ms. TTY, Mr. PVT (both living in Dong Xoai town) and Mr. NQV (living in Ho Chi Minh City). Ha introduced himself as Tang Minh Nhat Hai (living in Hanoi). Ha worked at the Ministry of Public Security, his father worked at the Ministry of Public Security, his mother worked at a large bank in Ho Chi Minh City.

To gain the trust of his “prey”, Ha said that he was sent by his leaders to Binh Phuoc to do a special project on foreigners and that he had a very close relationship with some leaders of the Binh Phuoc Provincial Police. Ha also boasted that he had 300,000 USD deposited in a foreign bank and a savings book of 300 million VND in a bank in Ho Chi Minh City.

From September to October 2015, Ha lied that she had an account at a foreign bank, but that she had to deposit money to withdraw money from the account, in order to defraud Ms. TTY of 344.7 million VND and 2 Iphone 6 Plus mobile phones.

Using the same method, Ha appropriated 255.6 million VND from Mr. NQV and 120 million VND from Mr. PVT. Ha spent all of the above money for personal use. At the trial, Ha confessed honestly and bowed his head to admit his guilt. Dong Xoai Town People's Court sentenced Ha to the above sentence and requested the defendant to compensate the victims more than 700 million VND.
