Impersonating the President's Office to defraud the temple
Knowing that the temple often does charity work, Giang called claiming to represent the Office of the President, wanting to ask for a large sum of money but had to spend 200 million VND to complete the paperwork.
On December 7, Nha Be District Police urgently arrested Nguyen Van Giang (28 years old, Tan Binh District) to investigate the act of fraud and property appropriation.
This person said there are two charity projects worth 3.5 million USD funded by foreign organizations. Of which, the aid package is 800,000 USD.want to help the temple but have to spend 200 million dong to do the paperwork.
Many times persuading over the phone, the abbot of Huyen Trang pagoda agreed to pay for the documents. On November 28, Giang sent his accomplice Nguyen Hong Phong (29 years old, living in Go Vap district) to the pagoda, claiming to be Trung's assistant who had just landed from Hanoi. After giving the abbot an application for aid (prepared by Giang) to fill out, this guy received an advance of 50 million VND and then shared it with Giang.
Seeing how easy it was to cheat money, Giang repeatedly called the abbot to urge him to give him the remaining 150 million VND. Otherwise, he would transfer the aid application to another unit.
Suspecting that he had been scammed, the abbot contacted the Office of the President to verify. Knowing that there was no official named Trung and that there were no large charity packages, the abbot reported the matter to the police. At noon on December 5, Phong went to Huyen Trang Pagoda to receive 10 million VND and was caught red-handed by the police.
From Phong's testimony, the police arrested Giang when he was hiding at a motel on Binh Gia Street, Ward 13, Tan Binh District.
