At 6:00 p.m. on December 20, the AAG submarine cable - one of the cables connecting Vietnam's Internet to the world - was broken. This cable has a number of service providers in Vietnam connected to it, such as VDC, FPT, Viettel...

On the afternoon of the 21st, Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai, Deputy Director of VDC, said that the break in this cable line affected about 40% of VDC's international Internet traffic.

In addition to AAG, this unit also operates several other sea and land cable lines. Currently, VDC has fixed about 60% of the affected traffic.

Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa, General Director of FPT Telecom, also said that the company's international Internet traffic will be affected by about 27-31%. FPT has used a land cable to forward traffic from AAG.

Viettel representative said that this unit was affected by about 15% of traffic and is coordinating with other parties to fix it.

Based on his experience, Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai guessed that the cause could be due to a large ship dropping anchor, which broke the cable when pulling the anchor, or due to geological shocks... And, welding the cable would take at least 5-7 days.

However, in complicated cases (weather changes, fiber optic cable welding ships are not near the area, procedures for entering the sea area where the cable is broken, etc.), this restoration can take up to two weeks. In addition, when the cable is welded, the technician must also check the system to see if the cable connections are correct, unplug the machine, etc., so even after the welding is completed, it will take a short time for the Internet traffic to operate normally.

More than 2 years ago, on March 8, 2011, the AAG fiber optic cable was also broken. However, it took 20 days for the cable to be restored.

AAG was inaugurated and put into use in November 2009 with a length of more than 20,000km, a design capacity of 2 Terabit/second, directly connecting Southeast Asia with the US. The landing point in Vietnam is in Vung Tau.

In addition to connecting Southeast Asia with the US, AAG can also connect to Australia, India, Europe and Africa through the system's landing points.
