Cheap camera detects spoiled fruit
Normally, a see-through camera costs from several thousand to several tens of thousands of dollars. However, this new camera is only about 800 dollars.
A group of scientists from the University of Washington, USA, in collaboration with Microsoft, are developing fruit camera technology that can help detect spoiled fruit easily.
The camera can give an image of the condition of the fruit. |
The camera, called HyperCam, uses near-infrared light to see details that are invisible to the naked eye. Scientists used the camera to take a test photo of a human hand, and the results showed clear images of the person’s veins and tendons. In tests with this camera, the correct recognition rate for human hands was up to 99% and the correct recognition rate for fruit ripeness was 94%.
Normally, a see-through camera like this would cost anywhere from a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars. However, in a recent press conference, the product development team estimated that the product would cost only about $800.
A major challenge for the development team right now is that HyperCam doesn’t work well in bright light. Scientists are working to make the camera smaller so it can be mounted on mobile devices. If it were installed on a mobile phone, it would cost as little as $50.
