In the future, the risk of ATM card password theft will be eliminated thanks to a completely new generation of ATMs that can scan customers' irises.

After losing their cards, many users have had their bank accounts drained by thieves simply because they were careless and set easy-to-guess passwords like 123456. However, in the future, these types of risks will be eliminated thanks to a completely new generation of ATMs that Citigroup is researching.

Citigroup is working with ATM maker Diebold to develop a line of automated teller machines that can scan customers' irises or smartphone codes to trigger withdrawals, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The purpose of this technology is to increase the security and safety of transactions. When a thief inserts a fake card into the card reader of the machine, the machine will not recognize it. Even if they steal a real card and insert it into the reader to withdraw money, the iris will not match the database and the withdrawal request will not be accepted.

In the long run, users will not even need a physical card anymore. ATMs will therefore not need screens and touch panels. All they need is an iris scanner or a barcode scan on their phones.

To withdraw money, users log into their bank’s mobile app, select the amount they want to withdraw, then go to the ATM and the machine will dispense the exact amount requested on the app, after scanning their irises to authenticate their identity.

Sounds great, right? But of course, this technology is not going to be available in the near future. Citigroup is still testing the technology and has not decided whether to pursue such a more expensive and time-consuming technology./.
