A Rossiya Airlines plane carrying members of the Saudi Arabian football team caught fire in mid-air on June 18 as the team was flying to Rostov-on-Don to play Uruguay. The plane landed safely. Images of the incident were posted on social media.
The airline said the plane hit a bird and caused an engine fire, but insisted there was "no problem that threatened the safety of passengers." Saudi Arabian Football Federation President Ahmad Al Harbi said: "There was a small fire in the right engine but the plane landed safely."
Saudi Arabia, making their first appearance at the World Cup since 2006, lost 5-0 to Russia on the opening day and could struggle again against Uruguay on June 20.
