The hybrid aircraft, a blimp, was ripped from its mast and crashed into a field in Bedfordshire. Witnesses said the craft hit trees, damaging the hull and causing a helium leak. The 10-ton Airlander was completely destroyed.
On Friday, Hybrid Air Vehicles, the manufacturer of the Airlander 10, successfully conducted a test flight. The cost of construction is up to one hundred million pounds, - according to the Daily Mail.
The Airlander 10 was originally designed for the US armed forces, but the project was canceled due to lack of funding.
The 92-meter-long aircraft can reach an altitude of 4.9 kilometers and develop speeds of up to 148 kilometers per hour. Thanks to helium, Airlander 10 can stay in the air for two weeks./.
