On the afternoon of December 28, Tan Ky District People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial against defendant Nguyen Thi Dung (born 1973) and her son Nguyen Ngoc Hien (born 1998), both residing in Tan Lam hamlet, Phu Son commune, Tan Ky, for the crime of "Property destruction".

According to the indictment, at around 8:00 p.m. on October 28, after dinner, Dung had the idea of ​​cutting down cassava and sugarcane plants belonging to the family of Hoang Nghia Ky (younger brother of Hoang Nghia Cong, who lives in the same hamlet). Dung discussed with her son Hien the plan to cut down the plants.

At around 4am on October 29, Hien took two knives and took her mother to Khe Du Chua hamlet on a motorbike. The mother and daughter chopped down the entire sugarcane area and part of the cassava area of ​​Ky's family. At 5:45am, afraid that people would find out, the mother and daughter got on a motorbike and left.

This area of ​​sugarcane and cassava is located on plot number 106, map sheet number 02 in Du Chua stream area, and was granted Certificate of land use rights number H00393/2340.QDUB by Tan Ky District People's Committee to Mr. Cong and his wife in 2006.

Since January 2017, Mr. Cong has let Mr. Ky's family use the land for farming. Because Dung's family is having a dispute, they have the intention of sabotage.

On November 8, realizing that their act of property destruction was a violation of the law, Dung and her son went to Tan Ky District Police to surrender.

Through the investigation, the police determined that Dung and her daughter had cut down 3,544 sugarcane trees and 2,007 high-yield cassava plants belonging to Mr. Ky's family, with a total value of more than 4,417 million VND. Dung and Hien have fully compensated the victims.

At the end of the trial, the panel sentenced Nguyen Thi Dung to 12 months suspended, 12 months probation; Nguyen Ngoc Hien to 12 months of reform.
