(Baonghean.vn) - Clean water is a precious resource, but it is not inexhaustible. A lack of clean water threatens the lives of humans and other living organisms on Earth. Therefore, protecting and conserving clean water for your family is protecting this valuable resource that sustains life on our planet.

Signs of contaminated water sources

- Water that smells fishy and turns yellowish-green after being exposed to air is contaminated with iron and alum: You can use dried tea leaves or the sap of a small banana tree in the water; if it turns purple, the water is contaminated.

- Water with a strong, unpleasant odor like disinfectant is contaminated with chlorine. Almost all tap water sources use chlorine and ozone disinfection at the source; the strong chlorine smell in the morning when users draw water is due to excess chlorine and ozone in the water.

- Water with an unpleasant, nauseating odor indicates contamination with phenol and chlorine. Water with a foul, rotten egg smell indicates contamination with H2S (less common).

- Hard water (specifically, water containing calcium and magnesium salts) has a black film on the surface, makes cooking difficult, and causes scale buildup on utensils.

- Gastrointestinal diseases: Diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid fever, etc.

- Parasitic diseases: Worms, flukes, lice, etc.

- Diseases transmitted by insects that are related to water: Malaria, dengue fever, encephalitis…

- Diseases caused by viruses: Polio, hepatitis A…

- Skin diseases: Impetigo, boils, ringworm, tinea versicolor, trachoma, gynecological diseases, scarlet fever, etc.

- Diseases caused by contamination with toxins in water.

Methods to obtain clean water for the family.

For rainwater: Clean the roof at the beginning of the rainy season. Do not collect rainwater from the first rains of the season. Rainwater storage tanks must be clean and airtight.

For tap water: Clean the water tank regularly. Let the water sit in the tank for a while to allow any remaining disinfectant to evaporate.

For river and lake water: It must be filtered and settled before use.

For water from dug wells and boreholes: Use equipment such as filtration tanks and sprinkler systems to remove iron, manganese, etc., before use. Wells must be built far away from toilets and livestock pens (10-15m).

Always boil water before drinking it.

- Drink freshly boiled water after 24 hours (because after 24 hours, boiled and cooled water will become contaminated again).

- Water droplets after settling and drying in the sun for 1-2 days, using water filtration methods such as activated carbon filtration, spray filtration, etc.

How can we protect clean water sources?

- Do not dispose of garbage, animal carcasses, or human and animal waste into water sources.

- Do not build toilets on rivers, canals, streams, ponds, lakes, etc.

- Do not break or damage water pipes.

- Construct a toilet with a properly designed septic tank (to prevent waste from seeping into the ground).

- Be economical when using water.

Tips for saving clean water at home

Use water-saving sanitary fixtures.

To prevent water waste, a highly effective method is to replace old, water-wasting sanitary fixtures with new, water-saving ones. If you're building a new house, choosing water-saving fixtures for your beautiful home is a wise decision.

Make the most of water whenever possible.

When washing dishes, vegetables, or scrubbing objects, prepare a basin of clean water beforehand. The final rinse water can be reused for other purposes such as scrubbing or mopping the floor. Dirty water (without soap) can be used to water plants or remove dust from the soil.

Only wash directly under running water when absolutely necessary, and adjust the tap to a moderate flow.

+ Inspect and fix leaks

This is a way to prevent water loss that we need to address urgently, as water pipes can leak and cause serious water wastage.

To check, read the water meter before and after a two-hour period of inactivity. If the meter does not show the same reading, then there is a leak in the water supply system.

Next, we check for toilet leaks by adding some food coloring to the toilet's cistern. If color appears in the toilet bowl within 30 minutes of flushing, it means the toilet is leaking.

When a leak is detected, you should call a plumber or repair it yourself immediately.
