I also fell into the same situation once, sometimes thinking back I still feel scared. More than a year ago, I drove my whole family to my wife's hometown in Thai Binh. That day, I left Hanoi at 5am, the night before I went to bed late because I was busy watching football, at 7am I arrived in Thai Binh city, sleepiness started to come, I planned to stop and take a nap but then stopped, tried to drive a few dozen more kilometers to avoid the sun, only one more hour and I would be home, I told myself.
Then, in a moment, I fell asleep, a loud noise woke me up, the right front wheel lightly licked the concrete sidewalk on the right, the whole car was startled, but luckily no one was hit. Until now, I still keep the scratch on the rim to remember that carelessness. From then on, every time I have to go on a long trip, I always go to bed early, telling myself that if I feel sleepy, I must stop somewhere to take a nap. I am still lucky.
From my own experience, I would like to give some advice as follows: Go to bed early, get enough sleep and absolutely avoid alcohol and drinking if you have a long trip early the next morning. Prepare a wet towel to wipe your face occasionally to stay awake, you can chew gum while driving.
The air conditioner should always be set to outside air (only switch to inside air on dusty and smelly roads) to provide enough oxygen for everyone in the car. When traveling long distances, everyone should stay awake to talk, especially funny stories, so that the driver has the best mental state when driving.
