Tips for dealing with damp houses and furniture during humid weather.
These days, the humid weather causes floors and furniture to become damp and moldy, resulting in unpleasant odors in clothes and affecting people's health. Below are a few tips to help you deal with dampness in your house during humid weather.
Buy 10-15kg of quicklime, put it in a wooden or cardboard container, and place it under the bed or in a corner of the room.
When the weather isn't very humid, don't open the lid of the lime container. When the weather is very humid, or the house is very wet, open the lid of the lime container, close the doors, and only open the necessary windows. Because quicklime is a good dehumidifier, it can absorb all the moisture in the room, making the room dry.
Additionally, dried charcoal also has a moisture-absorbing effect, although it is not as effective as quicklime. Conversely, charcoal can be reused multiple times by drying it in the sun after use.
In addition, some habits people have that seem helpful in combating humidity actually backfire, making the house even more humid. According to construction experts, actively opening doors and windows allows wind to carry moisture and damp air from outside, making the floor even wetter and more uncomfortable. Some people also have the habit of turning on fans to "dry" the house, but this causes condensation, leading to musty and unpleasant odors.

The best way to reduce dampness is to keep doors and windows closed, especially in the morning. At midday, when there's sunlight or the temperature rises, try to open the doors and windows. Avoid mopping with wet cloths; instead, use dry towels to absorb all the moisture on the floor to prevent slips and falls. If your family uses air conditioning, set it to a higher temperature to combat dampness and eliminate odors.
Mold can easily cause illness, especially in the elderly and young children. Parents should not allow children to go barefoot or crawl on damp floors. Children are susceptible to colds, so they need to be dressed warmly, but absolutely not in damp or not completely dry clothes. At the same time, pay attention to a nutritious diet to boost the child's immune system.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Loi, a lecturer at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, leaving electronic devices such as TVs, computers, DVD players, and cameras plugged in and in standby mode during humid weather is essential to prevent mold growth. Additionally, it's advisable to regularly (at least once a day) turn on TVs and computers to combat humidity. If an electronic device does become damp, use a hairdryer to dry the inside to prevent electrical leakage, which can be dangerous. However, for complex electronic devices like TVs and computers, if malfunctions occur during humid weather, it's best to seek professional assistance. Attempting to disassemble and dry them improperly can lead to short circuits and damage to the internal electronic circuits.
To preserve electronic devices such as cameras and audio recorders, you can place them in a sealed container with a desiccant, or put a lit light bulb (25-60W depending on the size of the container) inside the container to heat the equipment.
Additionally, avoid placing these devices directly on the floor or against the wall to prevent electrical leakage or mold. They should be placed 1 meter above the ground and 10-15 cm away from the wall.
