Xinhua news agency reported that on January 14, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree calling up at least 50,000 people from the country's reserve force amid the escalating conflict in the eastern regions.

“I will sign this decree and send it to parliament for approval,” Mr Poroshenko said at a meeting of regional officials.

The Ukrainian president stressed that his decision was to strengthen the country's defense forces because the tense situation in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions in recent days had escalated, causing many casualties.

According to the decree, the upcoming mobilization of reserve forces in 2015 will be divided into three phases, of which the first phase will be launched on January 20. The decree is expected to be submitted to the National Assembly on January 15.

Last year, Kiev carried out three partial mobilizations to call on troops to participate in a military campaign against rebels in the eastern region, who are seeking to secede from Ukraine./.
