Smart patch delivers medicine into the body painlessly

Researchers at the National University of Singapore have invented a new type of patch with tiny needles attached to it that helps deliver drugs such as vaccines, insulin or painkillers into the patient's body quickly and painlessly.
The use of conventional syringes may soon become a thing of the past thanks to a new invention by Dr. Kang Lifeng and colleagues at the National University of Singapore.

It is a small patch with dozens of needles only 0.6mm long, easily penetrate the skin. When used, just gently stroke, the medicine will penetrate into the skin in a very short time, only about 5 minutes.
“The skin is a very important protective layer. Most water-soluble molecules or large molecules cannot penetrate the skin, so we have to deliver drugs orally or by injection,” said Dr. Cang Li-pheng. “What’s special about this patch is that if you peel off the backing of the patch, you can see the micro-needle containing the drug, which can penetrate directly into the skin.”
The patch developed by the scientists is suitable for both medical and commercial use. Medically, this invention will help many patients not to suffer pain during injections, especially diabetic patients who often have to inject insulin into their bodies.
Dr. Cang Li-pheng explained that insulin will be delivered into this patch. Then, patients do not need to inject, instead, they just need to stick this patch and the insulin will be delivered through the skin without causing pain. Patients can do it themselves without the need for a nurse. Meanwhile, with beauty substances such as collagen, this patch will help collagen penetrate into the dermis layer of the skin while conventional creams only reach the outermost layer.
According to researchers, the cost of producing this patch is only about 1 USD, however the price can fluctuate depending on the type of drug put into the patch./.
