Rally in response to World Environment Day, Vietnam Sea and Islands Week

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of June 4, the People's Committee of Nghe An province held a rally to respond to World Environment Day, World Oceans Day and Vietnam Sea and Islands Week 2014.

Attending the ceremony, on behalf of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, there were comrades: Le Van Hop - Director of the Department of Emulation and Commendation; Nguyen Viet Dung - Deputy Director of the Department of Organization and Personnel, General Department of Environment. On behalf of Nghe An province, there were comrades: Dinh Viet Hong - Provincial Party Committee member, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; representatives of leaders of provincial departments, branches, sectors, unions, leaders of Vinh City People's Committee and organizations and individuals who won the Nghe An Provincial Environmental Award in 2014.

With the theme “Take action to prevent sea level rise”, this year’s World Environment Day emphasizes the importance of environmental protection and climate change response for vulnerable areas such as islands and coastal areas. According to assessments, Vietnam is one of the ten countries severely affected by climate change and rising sea levels. With an 82km long coastline and a population concentrated in the eastern coastal region, Nghe An is in the most severely damaged area. Rising sea levels bring about many negative impacts such as coastal erosion, damage to irrigation works and coastal transport infrastructure, saltwater intrusion deep into the mainland, affecting agricultural production, gradually leading to loss of productive land.

Comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the province awarded certificates of merit in the Community category to representatives of the units.

Comrade Vo Duy Viet - Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment awarded prizes to individuals who won the Nghe An Provincial Environmental Award.

On behalf of the Provincial People's Committee, Comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee delivered a speech in response to the rally. He called on and requested the authorities, unions at all levels, social organizations, businesses and all people, within their responsibilities, to take practical actions to rationally use resources and protect the environment, proactively respond to climate change, and protect sovereignty and security of the sea and islands.

Delegates donated to support the program "Joining hands for the homeland's sea and islands".

The ceremony also launched the Donation and Support Program “Joining hands for the homeland’s sea and islands”; announced the Decision and awarded the collectives and individuals who were awarded the Nghe An Provincial Environmental Award. The total prize was 131 million 100 thousand VND, awarded to 4 collectives, 2 communities and 3 individuals with many achievements in environmental activities.
