Rally to celebrate World Oceans Day
On the morning of June 7 at Vinh University, the Ministry of Education and Training organized a "Rally to celebrate World Oceans Day June 8, 2011 and the Coastal Cleanup Campaign".
Attending the event were Associate Professor Dr. Tran Quang Quy - Deputy Minister of Education and Training, Nguyen Dinh Chi - Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee; representatives of the Propaganda Department, Cua Lo Town, Provincial Youth Union, Department of Education and Training, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Natural Resources and Environment and universities and colleges in the province, along with teachers and students of Vinh University.
World Oceans Day is an initiative of the Canadian Government proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. From this initiative, in 2008, the United Nations General Assembly issued a Resolution officially recognizing World Oceans Day as June 8 every year. The United Nations recognizes World Oceans Day to celebrate and honor the value of the ocean.
Speaking at the ceremony, Associate Professor Dr. Tran Quang Quy requested the Departments of Education and Training, universities, colleges, and vocational schools nationwide to raise awareness of the position and importance of the sea and islands in economic and social development; to propagate and educate about the sovereignty of the sea and islands, contributing to protecting the sacred sovereignty of the country. Strengthen education about the marine environment and environmental protection. Organize campaigns to clean up the coast, water sports activities or on the coast. Select and reward typical individuals and groups of units with outstanding achievements in the cause of protecting marine resources and the environment...
At the rally, the Deputy Minister of Education and Training launched a campaign to clean up the beach. The delegation and many volunteer students from Vinh University and Cua Lo Town Youth Union joined forces to clean up Cua Lo beach.
