National rally in response to World Environment Day June 5
On the morning of June 3, in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment coordinated with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor and the People's Committee of Quang Ninh Province to organize a national rally in response to World Environment Day (June 5) and the International Year of Sustainable Energy 2012.
The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Green Economy: Does it include you?” The world is facing challenges of economic crisis and energy transition. And Vietnam is also in that cycle as it is struggling to face many challenges of economic recession as well as energy security.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai plants trees in response to World Environment Day
Speaking at the rally, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said that green economy is a development trend and the choice of many countries in the world. Green economy is considered a new model, solving global challenges, and at the same time, is a necessary factor to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
Vietnam has approached the green economy with specific programs, affirming the Government's determination in implementing the goal of changing the growth model, restructuring the economy towards sustainable development, mitigating the impact of climate change, linking growth with social equity, reducing poverty and protecting the environment.
In fact, in recent years, although Vietnam has achieved great and important achievements in socio-economic development, it still reveals limitations and shortcomings such as: Economic growth still relies heavily on the exploitation of natural resources, slow transition to in-depth development, high consumption of raw materials and energy, environmental pollution is becoming increasingly serious, especially the negative impacts of climate change.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai requested that all levels of government, sectors, and all citizens continue to restructure the economy towards in-depth development, limiting the development of economic sectors that generate large amounts of waste, causing pollution and environmental degradation.
Awarding Environmental Awards to individuals and groups
Accepting the direction of the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Nguyen Minh Quang said that we need to continue restructuring the economy in depth, widely applying cleaner; Sectors and localities develop implementation strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; greening lifestyles to implement the new rural strategy, instead; at the same time, it is necessary to increase resources for environmental protection towards a green economy.
Also at the rally, the representative of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment - Deputy Minister Bui Cach Tuyen awarded Certificates of Merit to 21 collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements in environmental protection. Mr. Dang Huy Hau - Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee also awarded Certificates of Merit to 30 individuals with achievements in local environmental protection.
After the rally, representatives of the Party, State and Quang Ninh provincial leaders, along with leaders of a number of units, participated in the Mangrove Planting Program and the Tree Planting Program at the Mine Waste Dump./.
