Mr Romney, 65, had previously won enough votes to secure his candidacy in a tense primary between Republican Party members in different states in May.

According to the rules, each candidate needs at least 1,144 votes at the national convention to be able to represent the party in the race for the White House next November. Thanks to the support of many delegates from New Jersey, the former governor of Massachusetts took the lead with 2,061 votes.

Just minutes after Mr. Romney was chosen, Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan was also elected as the candidate for vice president.

The Republican Party convention yesterday also adopted an agenda calling for the US government to cut taxes to revive the economy, repeal and replace President Obama's controversial new health law and end abortion.

Republicans have also taken aim at Obama. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus quipped that the president “has never run a company. He hasn’t even run a car dealership or been behind a soda fountain.”

Meanwhile, US House Speaker John Boehner said "Obama's record is as shallow as his speeches."

It is known that Mr. Romney did not appear at the conference yesterday but only watched the vote on television with his wife, Mrs. Ann Romney, at a nearby hotel.

Ann Romney is scheduled to give a televised address on the night of August 28. The potential first lady will talk about her marriage and how Mr. Romney helped her cope with multiple sclerosis and breast cancer.

Ann's speech shed some light on the private life of Mr Romney, who most voters know little about other than that he was a successful businessman and former governor of Massachusetts.

Vice presidential candidates Ryan and Romney are expected to give televised speeches on the evenings of August 29 and 30, respectively.

According to the BBC, President Obama's official role as the Democratic Party's nominee will also be confirmed at the national Democratic Party convention in Charlotte, North Carolina next week.
