(Baonghean.vn)- About 200 women inTien Phong hamlet, Nam Hung commune(Nam Dan, Nghe An)Divided into 10 groups, they take turns growing galangal on the hill, bringing in an income of about 50 million VND/year for each household.
Galangal has been grown by the people of Tien Phong hamlet, Nam Hung commune (Nam Dan) for 20 years. However, in the past 5 years, the women of the hamlet have established 10 galangal growing groups, each group has over 20 people to help each other. The women take turns, today they build this house, tomorrow they build that house, following the "shifting" model. |
Although the investment for growing galangal is not much, the care process requires a lot of work. Therefore, when planting galangal, it is necessary to follow the right technique and choose the right weather. |
Care and fertilization must also follow the correct process. |
The process of trimming the galangal into finished products is considered the most difficult and meticulous. After harvesting, the galangal must be shaken clean of soil and the roots must be cut off. Therefore, when forming a team, the women help each other more effectively and quickly. |
Without the rotating teams helping each other, it would be impossible to take care of, harvest, and peel the galangal every day. Because it takes one person nearly 10 minutes to clean one galangal root like this. |
Due to its suitability to hilly soil, galangal grown in Tien Phong weighs from 0.5 to 0.7 kg/root. After cleaning, Tien Phong villagers pack galangal into bags, waiting for traders to come and buy it at home. The average price of galangal is from 12 to 14 thousand VND/kg. Sometimes it goes up to 20 thousand VND/kg. |
On average, each household earns at least 50 million VND/year from growing galangal. Some households earn more than 150 million VND/year. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang - Head of the Women's Association of Tien Phong hamlet (second from left) shared: "In addition to increasing household income, this model also strengthens the bond between neighbors." |
