Heart surgery saves the life of a premature baby
MSc. Dr. Le Xuan Trung - head of the neonatal department of Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital - said that doctors had just successfully performed heart surgery, saving the life of Do Van Kim (village 3, Hoang Kim commune, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa).

Kim was given emergency treatment by hospital doctors, put on a ventilator, and given vasoconstrictor drugs. An X-ray showed that the patient had grade three hyaline membrane disease, an echocardiogram showed a large patent ductus arteriosus, and severe pulmonary hypertension. Doctors had to inject surfactant (a substance that reduces the surface tension of the lungs of premature babies) into Kim, put her on a high-frequency ventilator, and provide intravenous nutrition.
After 5 days of treatment, Kim's health showed signs of improvement but her pulmonary pressure was still high. After consultation at the cardiothoracic department, the doctors decided to perform emergency surgery to close the ductus arteriosus (a type of open heart surgery).
After surgery to close the ductus arteriosus and 12 days of intensive treatment, Kim's health is now stable, no longer requiring a ventilator; she eats and digests well and will be discharged in the coming days.
According to Dr. Trung, this is the first time Thanh Hoa Children's Hospital has successfully performed heart surgery on a premature baby.
