A seven-year study of nearly 500,000 people concluded that eating fruit daily reduced the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 40%.

Dr. Du Huaidong from the University of Oxford, UK presented this research at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Congress held earlier this week in Barcelona.

The majority of participants in the China Kadoorie Biobank chronic disease study came from 10 regions of the country. The total number of volunteers was 451,681, all of whom had no history of cardiovascular disease and were not currently being treated for hypertension.

Fruit eating habits of the study subjects were recorded and classified into the following groups: never, monthly, 1 to 3 days a week, 4 to 6 days a week, and daily.

About 18% of study participants had a habit of eating fruit daily (about 150g) and 6.3% never ate fruit.

Research shows that the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 25 to 40% for people who eat fruit every day. At the same time, as research has shown, eating fruit also helps you lower blood pressure.

Daily fruit consumption was also associated with 3.4 mmHg lower systolic blood pressure and 4.1 mmHg lower diastolic blood pressure compared with those who abstained from fruit.

A separate analysis found mortality associated with fruit intake in 61,000 study subjects from the China Kadoorie Biobank not included in the previous study due to cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure.

In this group, people who consumed fruit daily reduced their risk of death by 32% compared to those who did not eat fruit./
