"Our main task is not to give or take anything, but to sign a peace treaty," Mr. Peskov said on the program "Moscow. Kremlin. Putin" on the Rossiya 1 TV channel.
At the same time, he added that the signing of the agreement would end "World War II". The Russian leader's statement also called Japan a very important partner.
According to him, one of the most important obstacles in the negotiations is Japan's support for sanctions against Russia. However, he noted that the Kremlin is feeling a strong breakthrough in developing bilateral relations with Japan.
Earlier, Japanese media reported that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said it was possible to sign a peace agreement with Russia if the Kremlin agreed to transfer the Habomai and Shikotan islands.
