(Baonghean.vn) - ThoseThese days, people who make mats in Hung Hoa commune (Vinh city) are bustling with the second sedge harvest of the year. The sedge is dried in the middle of the fields, on the alluvial ground along the Lam river dike and even in small yards in front of houses.
As a suburban unit of Vinh, Hung Hoa commune has a total of 65 hectares of sedge land with 600 households, mainly concentrated in Phong Hao and Phong Thuan hamlets. After the flood receded, Hung Hoa people rushed to harvest the second sedge crop of the year. |
Every year, sedge growers have two harvests: the winter-spring crop and the summer-autumn crop (from March to April and from August to September of the lunar calendar). After harvesting, the sedge is cut off at the base and top and then split by hand before drying. |

In addition to harvesting sedge to weave mats according to the traditional profession, Hung Hoa sedge is also sold to traders in Ha Tinh, Thanh Hoa... for about 700,000 VND/quintal. In one season, each family harvests an average of 2-3 quintals of sedge. |
Although the sedge mat craft village of Hung Hoa commune has not been as prosperous as before, due to the characteristics of the saline land, which has favorable conditions for sedge to grow, the mat weaving profession is still maintained by some households, thereby increasing their family income. |
