Buying air conditioner: Signs to help save maximum electricity

April 26, 2017 15:35

Not only the word "inverter" is an energy-saving line, there are many other symbols on the air conditioner that you need to learn immediately to choose a truly energy-saving air conditioner for the upcoming summer.

When buying air conditioners at supermarkets, most sales staff advise customers about inverter air conditioners, because they are energy-saving air conditioners. On the cooling system, you can easily see the word “inverter”.

In fact, inverter air conditioners are simply air conditioners that use modern digital technology. The entire room temperature regulation of the machine is controlled through an intelligent microprocessor electronic circuit instead of the technology of using thermal sensor relays of conventional air conditioners.

Hiện có 2 dòng thiết bị là điều hòa thông thường sử dụng rơ-le cảm biến nhiệt và điều hòa ứng dụng công nghệ biến tần (Inverter), kiểm soát nhiệt độ thông qua bộ mạch điện tử vi xử lý.
There are currently two types of equipment: conventional air conditioners using thermal sensor relays and air conditioners using inverter technology, controlling temperature through a microprocessor electronic circuit.

In addition, another big advantage of this air conditioner line is energy saving. If used on average more than 8 hours per day, the power consumption of an inverter air conditioner is only half that of a conventional air conditioner, which means saving half the electricity bill. The advantage of air conditioners using Inverter technology is the ability to control room temperature very precisely. Normally, the temperature difference on an Inverter air conditioner is only about 0.1-1 degrees Celsius. Thanks to that, the room temperature is usually very stable.

However, air conditioners with the word inverter also have a higher price than regular air conditioners by 2-4 million VND compared to regular air conditioners.

Energy label energy saving rating

In addition, you also need to pay attention to the "energy rating label".

Many people will find it strange, but simply put, the “energy efficiency rating label” is a sticker confirming that the product’s performance and electricity consumption meet or exceed the energy efficiency standards (HEPS) set by the Ministry of Industry and Trade at the time the product is tested. The level of electricity consumption and usage has been proven through the results of testing, measurement and evaluation by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The fewer stars an air conditioner has, the higher its energy consumption and usage. The 5-star label is considered to have the most energy-efficient energy consumption and usage.

Accordingly, the fewer stars the air conditioner has, the higher the level of energy consumption and usage. The 5-star label is considered to have the most energy-saving level. Of course, products with 5-star labels are often more expensive than other products. On air conditioner lines, there will be comparative energy labels. You will notice that on the rectangular green label there are 1-5 stars along with detailed parameters related to the origin, evaluation standards, and energy consumption efficiency of the product.

The energy efficiency rating label is affixed to the air conditioner, so pay attention to this detail when buying.

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER)

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) is one of the important factors of air conditioners. With most air conditioners on the market today, the EER index is usually listed on the energy label or on the technical specifications table on the machine.

Each air conditioner has an energy efficiency rating (EER). This rating indicates how many British thermal units (BTU) per hour (BTU) each watt of electricity used will produce. Accordingly, the EER energy efficiency rating is calculated as follows: EER=BTU/W.

The EER of an air conditioner is measured by the ratio of its cooling capacity in BTU/h (also written as BTU) to its power consumption in watts (BTU/h/W). The higher the EER, the more efficient the air conditioner. For example, if an air conditioner with a rating of 10,000 BTU consumes 1,200W of electricity, the EER is 8.3 (i.e. 10,000BTU/1,200W).

EER is usually only used to evaluate the energy efficiency of conventional air conditioners. However, the most important thing is that products with higher EER index always come with a higher price, but help users save a lot of electricity bills. For places such as offices, businesses, places that require continuous equipment, the EER index is even more effective in terms of saving a lot in a short time.

CSPF Energy Performance Index

Many air conditioners have their energy efficiency listed as EER, but many have their energy efficiency listed as CSPF. So, how is CSPF understood?

CSPF (abbreviation of Cooling Seasonal Performance Factor) means the cooling performance index for the whole season. The CSPF index tells us how much cold air will be received from the conditioned space for every 1kWh of electricity consumed by the air conditioner, taking into account the seasonal temperature changes in a year.

Like EER, CSPF is also a measure to evaluate the energy efficiency of air conditioners and refrigerators. The higher the CSPF value, the greater the cooling efficiency.

For users, the CSPF index is quite important in choosing to buy an air conditioner. With the same type of product, if consumers choose a product with a larger CSPF coefficient, it means that the air conditioner has the ability to save more electricity. Compared to the EER index, the CSPF index is more accurate and closer to reality.

Calculate area to choose appropriate air conditioner capacity

In addition to the above parameters, buyers need to calculate the area of the installation room to choose the air conditioner with the appropriate capacity.

Specifically, the formula applied is 1m2x600BTU (BTU is the British thermal unit, used to measure the capacity of heating or cooling equipment). For example, a room with an area of 15m2, you will calculate: 15m2 x 600 BTU = 9,000 BTU equivalent to a 1 HP air conditioner (1HP = 1 horse power equivalent to 9,000 BTU).

Accordingly, rooms of 15m2 or less should choose a machine with a capacity of 1 horsepower; rooms of 15-20m2 should choose a machine with a capacity of 1.5 horsepower; rooms of 20-30m2 should choose a machine with a capacity of 2 horsepower; rooms of over 30-40m2 should choose a machine with a capacity of 2.5 horsepower.
