Mumbai in pain after a series of devastating bombings

July 14, 2011 16:27

Perhaps no city in the world has been the target of more terrorist attacks and bombings than Mumbai, which has suffered a series of tragedies in 1993, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2008 and most recently on July 13, 2011.

Last night, three bomb blasts within 10 minutes ripped through three of the city's busiest centres - Zaveri Bazar, Opera House and Dadar - during rush hour, killing 17 people and injuring 131, according to the latest announcement from the authorities.

Earlier, it was reported that 21 people died and more than 100 were injured.

The first explosion occurred at 6:54 p.m. at Zaveri Bazaar, followed a minute later by an explosion at the Opera House. The third explosion occurred at 7:06 p.m. outside Kabutarkhana, just a few meters from Dadar railway station. This was the third terrorist attack on Zaveri Bazaar.

Timed explosives were placed on cars at the Opera House and Zaveri Market, while in Dadar, a bus stop was the target. Police said the three locations were chosen to maximize the damage. The Times of India quoted police commissioner Arup Patnaik as saying it was a terrorist attack.

While Mumbai police have not named any group responsible for the blasts, sources say they could be the work of the banned Indian Mujahideen (IM), which recently formed a group called Team 313 and recruited all youths.

The state government convened an emergency cabinet meeting early on the morning of July 14. State Congress chief Manikrao Thakre denied that this was an intelligence failure.

Union Home Minister P Chidambaram visited three bomb blast sites in Mumbai on the evening of July 13 to assess the situation.

Mumbai, as well as the capital Delhi and several other cities, have been put on high alert following the above explosions./.
