US 'quietly' seeks to ease Russia sanctions bill

June 23, 2017 08:48

According to The New York Times, the White House is quietly lobbying Republican members of the US House of Representatives to soften the Russia sanctions bill passed by the US Senate on June 14.

The effort is aimed at preventing a Russia-related veto battle between the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled US Congress, at a time when Mr. Trump is facing investigations into possible collusion between him and Russia during the 2016 US presidential campaign.

House Republicans, typically hawks on Russia, now face a choice between taking a tough line on Moscow and avoiding confrontation with President Trump.

On June 20, Republican Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas filed an objection, which helped block the bill from passing in the House and may force it to be rewritten. However, Congress still has bipartisan support for tough sanctions against Russia.

Meanwhile, it is unclear whether the White House can get enough support in Congress to change the Russia sanctions bill. At the same time, Democratic lawmakers are increasing pressure on House Republicans to quickly pass the sanctions bill that the Senate has already passed./.
