US imposes sanctions on North Korea after Sony cyberattack

According to Reuters and AFP, on January 2, the White House announced that US President Barack Obama had authorized the imposition of additional sanctions on North Korea.

The sanctions were Washington's first response to the cyberattack on Sony Pictures, which North Korea is accused of carrying out.

According to the US Treasury Department, these additional sanctions target three companies and 10 North Korean government officials, including individuals working in Iran, Syria, China, Russia and Namibia.

In a letter to congressional leaders announcing his executive order, President Obama emphasized that he is ordering the imposition of these sanctions because of the Government of North Korea's provocative, destabilizing, and repressive actions and policies, including its cyber-related sabotage in recent months.11-12/2014.
