According to THX and Yonhap, on May 11, the US State Department accused North Korea of frequently delaying or denying Washington consular access to two US citizens recently detained by Pyongyang.

The statement was made after North Korea threatened to "mercilessly punish" the two US citizens, who were accused by Pyongyang of "committing crimes" against the country.

US State Department spokeswoman Katina Adams said the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang is responsible for protecting the rights of US citizens in North Korea because Washington and Pyongyang do not have diplomatic relations.

According to Ms. Adams, despite requests from the Swedish Embassy, North Korea "continually delays or denies consular access to U.S. citizens." Ms. Adams also said the U.S. State Department warns its citizens against traveling to North Korea.

Meanwhile, the Pyongyang government announced that it will handle the two American citizens according to the law. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted a spokesman for the country's Foreign Ministry as saying that the two American citizens are being investigated by a law enforcement agency for crimes against the North Korean state./.
