Iran has no plans to acquire nuclear weapons and its program is purely for civilian purposes, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei told RT on June 28. He condemned recent Israeli and US attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities as dangerous and unprovoked.

Mr Baghaei rejected Israeli claims that Tehran had secretly developed nuclear weapons, which were used as a justification for the attacks, adding that reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) also supported Iran’s position.

"I think Iran has made it clear over the last two or three decades that they are not pursuing nuclear weapons," Baghaei said. "There has never been weapons-grade uranium enrichment in Iran. Please, look at the IAEA reports and show me one clue or evidence that Iran's nuclear program is deviating from a peaceful purpose."

"The reality is that Iran's nuclear program remains entirely peaceful," he affirmed.

The spokesman referred to remarks by the head of the global watchdog, Rafael Grossi, who said earlier this month that the agency had found no evidence of a “systematic effort” by Iran to develop nuclear weapons.

Mr Baghaei also expressed disappointment with the IAEA for not strongly condemning the attacks. “What is expected from the IAEA and its Board of Governors is to be faithful to its responsibilities and mandate by unequivocally condemning the attacks by the United States and the Israeli regime on our nuclear facilities,” he said.

He also defended Iran's right to enrich uranium under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“The US is pushing a very dangerous interpretation of the NPT – that developing countries have no right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. That is unacceptable to any responsible, decent member of the NPT,” Mr. Baghaei said.

Earlier this week, Iran's parliament passed a bill suspending cooperation with the IAEA, accusing the agency of providing a "pretext" for the attacks.
