US leads coalition to carry out 23 airstrikes against IS in early 2015

At least 15 IS militants have been killed in airstrikes carried out by the US-led coalition in Iraq.

Iraqi news agencies reported that IS leaders were also among the militants killed on the first day of 2015. Yesterday's statement from the anti-terrorism coalition also said that the US and its allies carried out 23 airstrikes against IS targets in Iraq and Syria on the first day of the new year.

Seven of the airstrikes were carried out in Iraq. According to the statement, the airstrikes were also carried out in Kobani, Ar Raqqah and Al Hasakah in Syria, destroying vehicles, buildings and positions occupied by the militants.

Earlier, on the last day of 2014, the US-led coalition conducted 17 airstrikes in Syria and 12 in Iraq. Thousands of people were killed, while hundreds of thousands of others were forced to leave their homes and seek refuge as IS rose strongly in Iraq and Syria.
