US threatens to impose sanctions on India over Russian arms purchase
The United States is concerned about India's plans to purchase Russian weapons, including the S-400 air defense system, and may impose restrictions related to these plans, Randall Shriver, US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs, said.

Speaking at the Carnegie Center for International Peace in Washington, he said he could not guarantee India that the CAATSA sanctions law would bypass it.
"I cannot tell you that India will not be sanctioned. This decision will be made by the US president whether he sees India's purchase of a new and potential Russian system... I cannot tell you that an exception will be made," Shriver said.
At the same time, he stated that the US acknowledges India's past relations with Russia in the defense sphere, but in the future Washington wants to reorient India towards itself.
“We can be a better and more trustworthy partner,” said Mr. Shiver.
