Earlier, Russia's Ria Novosti news agency quoted a diplomatic source as saying that Greece had rejected the US request, and that Russia wanted Greece to allow aid flights until September 24. The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the information.
Greece has sought to strengthen ties with Russia as it faces an economic crisis that nearly forced it to leave the eurozone.
Washington made the request after expressing concern to Moscow on September 5 over reports that Russia was preparing to significantly increase its military forces in Syria, largely to support President Assad.
