Vietnam and the US have just signed a Memorandum of Understanding on low-emission development strategy, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy, agriculture and forestry.

This is considered the first step of cooperation between the two countries in building and implementing low-emission development in Vietnam. The strategy aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from energy, agriculture, land and forestry.

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha and US Deputy Secretary of State Robert D. Hormats.

At the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha emphasized that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding is an important step in the roadmap to strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two countries towards increasingly deep, broad and effective development in all fields.

The Memorandum of Understanding will open up many opportunities for cooperation and experience exchange between the two sides, including cooperation in national greenhouse gas inventories; contributing to the development of emission models in agriculture, forestry, and land use; and contributing to the development of development models for the energy, industry, and transportation sectors.

Vietnam hopes that the US will support access to advanced technologies to develop according to a low-emission model, and join the international community in responding more effectively to climate change.

Mr. Robert D. Hormats, US Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment, said that the US has recognized the Vietnamese government's priorities on climate change and is ready to cooperate in this area. In addition, the US hopes to cooperate with Vietnam to solve environmental issues in the Mekong River basin and develop environmentally friendly and renewable energy.

Mr. Hormats met with many Vietnamese government officials during the visit, exchanging views on ways to deepen economic cooperation to encourage investment and trade for mutual benefit, including the TPP Agreement and specific energy projects. Deputy Minister Hormats stressed the importance of transparency and strict enforcement of intellectual property rights for enhancing economic cooperation.

At a talk with students of the National Economics University about green growth, Mr. Hormats emphasized that low-emission development strategies will be the trend of the future, protecting the environment without affecting the growth rate, while creating jobs. He said that the emission reduction projects that the US supports for Vietnam in Son La and Lam Dong are achieving good results.

Vietnam is one of the countries most affected by climate change, so choosing a green development strategy is very appropriate, contributing to the global fight against climate change, Mr. Hormats commented. Currently heavily dependent on fossil energy such as oil and coal, Vietnam can gradually switch to using more renewable energy such as solar energy, wind power and even nuclear power.
