(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, the US government has suggested that Iran - an ally of the Damascus regime - could participate in negotiations on the Syrian crisis and also pledged to increase airstrikes against the Islamic State (IS).

“We hope Iran will be invited to participate” in talks aimed at finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis taking place this weekend in Vienna, Austria, State Department spokesman John Kirby said. The first round of talks took place last week between the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

Despite the suggestion, the Washington administration did not specify who would deliver the invitation to Tehran, nor did it express hope that the Islamic Republic would accept. The next round of Syria talks is scheduled for October 30, but negotiators are proposing a preparatory meeting for the evening of October 29.

Regarding military operations in the Middle East, Washington also expressed its readiness to increase air strikes in Iraq and Syria. Mr. Ashton Carter - US Secretary of Defense stated, "We are planning to increase air strikes against IS with greater firepower and intensity."
